The 3G in 3GS stands for its ability to use 3G data and and the 'S' stands for speed.  This iPhone was twice as fast as the 3G.  The new software features that were added included a video camera, a digital compass and voice control. It was also the first iPhone able to hold up to 32GB of data.   A big difference with this iPhone was the camera upgrades, this new camera had an auto focus, a low light mode and the ability to trim videos.

iPhone 3G The iPhone 3G was released on June 9th 2008 in San Francisco. It came in black and white.  The dimensions of the 3G were slightly larger than its predecessor.  On the first weekend of sales the iPhone 3G was sold over 1 million times, this may be due to the fact that it was $300 cheaper than the orignal iPhone was when it was released.  This iPhone had a GPS, new hardware features and most noticeably the ability to use 3G data. T his was the first iPhone introduced with the App Store, which allowed 3rd party applications to be downloaded.  Apple also claimed that it has 300 hours of standby time compared to 250 on the original.

iPhone 1st Generation The first iPhone was released on June 29 2007. Steve Jobs (CEO of Apple) created a multi-touch touchscreen to interact with a computer in a way in which he could type directly onto the display. Jobs hired a group of Apple employees to research the project. After the first prototype was made Jobs decided to apply the technology to a mobile phone. Jobs described the phone as a touchscreen iPod that reinvented the 'phone'. Apple collaborated with AT&T to create the device, the development cost rose to around $150 million. When Jobs first released the phone he said this in his address "This is a day, that I have been looking forward to for two and a half years", and that "today, Apple is going to reinvent the phone."
